Icy comets have a reputation of the ancient system of “delivery” of water in Solar system objects, but a new study shows that most of the water on the moon actually came via asteroids from 4.5 billion to 4.3 billion years ago.
The results of a study published in the journal Nature Communications, sheds light on the development of satellites, giant planets, and our planet in the first years of life in the Solar system. In particular, the lunar soil today may contain from 10 thousand to 10 million times more water than on the surface. “Asteroids are also rich in water. An international team of scientists has obtained data from a number of different studies that have studied the rock samples brought from the moon and meteorites that have fallen to the Ground. About 80% of the water on the moon is the remains of a fallen asteroid, at least 20% of comets.
