Mogherini: Changes in the White house will not affect the EU’s position on Crimea

Могерини: Перемены в Белом доме никак не повлияют на позицию ЕС по Крыму

Not Washington define a policy of Brussels concerning Ukraine, said the TV channel Deutsche Welle Federica Mogherini. The position of the EU’s “illegal annexation” of the Crimea will remain unchanged, said the EU high representative for foreign Affairs.

Donald trump has expressed not only a willingness to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but his admiration for the style of government of the Russian leader.

If the United States will go on closer cooperation with the Russian Federation, as the European Union will react to it? Especially if you take into account Russia’s aggression in Eastern Ukraine.

FEDERICA MOGHERINI, EU high representative for foreign Affairs:

Our policy towards Ukraine will not change, I’m sure of it. It is not defined in Washington. In recent years, we have very fruitful, very constructively cooperated with Washington. This excellent collaboration has won both we and our partners. Cooperation between Europe and the United States is yielding results.

However, our policy is not determined in Washington. Thus, our position on the annexation of Crimea, which we believe to be unlawful, will remain unchanged. Our position on Ukraine will also remain unchanged.

Let me, however, to clarify. The European Union is working with Russia in various areas. For example, the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, which is now, however, carefully studying new President-elect [trump]. We did it with Russia.

We got along great and worked perfectly. For example, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. In this direction, we – the EU and Russia – perfectly work together. In addition, counter-terrorism, Libya and other issues. Even in Syria, despite the fact that our views differ greatly. We do cooperate with Russia on many foreign policy issues that are of interest for the Europeans, and Russians alike.

This does not mean that Europe does not speak with the Russian Federation. We’re talking about. We work with them. However, on the basis of positions of principle in our support of Ukraine and its territorial integrity, will clearly remain unchanged.
