Found the oldest in the history of London manuscripts

Experts of the Museum of London archaeology have discovered 400 wax coated wooden tablets, which were in correspondence the inhabitants of Roman Britain.

The discovery was made during excavation works in the financial centre of London on the site of the construction site for the new headquarters of Bloomberg.

Of those tablets the archeologists at the moment was able to decipher the 87 units.

One of them is the date: 8 Jan 57 ad. This plate, as scientists say, is the oldest manuscript document relating to the history of London.

Another sign, according to archaeologists, refers to 65-80 years of our era. It contains the address: “London, Magentis” – this is the oldest mention of the city, which the Romans called Londinium.

Signs are business correspondence: the authors are asking for different favors, for example, to repay debts or to lend.

Judging by the sign, at that time London was inhabited by entrepreneurs and soldiers, mostly natives of Gaul and the Rhine river basin.

Signs were found at the bottom of the river Walbrook, the river which now passes through underground tunnels.
